salary communications manager

Was unemployed for 8 months, unable to keep up with bills, it lowered my credit score, and now I have issues.?
I recently moved from Washington State to Texas for a job. I was unemployed for 8 months and was barely able to pay my rent and car payment so fell behind on all of my credit cards and other bills. I kept calling my credit cards and sending $25 a month and explaining my situation and they still closed my accounts and ended up charging them off. They raised all of my rates and even with constant communication screwed me in the end.
Now I am in Texas and am trying to rent an apartment. My score was 700 prior to losing my job and is now 518.
Any suggestions on how I can rent an apartment with such a low score? I just applied for a new place and am awaiting a response tomorrow. I have explained my situation to the manager in hopes that honesty would pay off. I make a very good salary and do not have any negative rental histories on my report.
Many landlords know people have had issues with credit the real issue is the cause. be upfront and honest and I think you can work this out. Check out craigslist and local newspapers, some smaller landlords do not even do credit checks – they are more likely to check past references and there you are in good shape
Remember that rental history is the number one concern with landlords who after all want to get paid
