environment communication

Which would be more important for the social environment in Asia and South Pacific?
I am currently learning Tagalog, Japanese, and Chinese Mandarin. Gotta love Rosetta Stone. Anyway, I traveled to the area earlier this year and did great with my Tagalog but I want to visit a few other countries in the area like Japan and China beyond the coast. So I am juggling on which languages I want to focus on that would greatly maximize my communication with people. I am a very social person so this is important to me as I want to have a really awesome time. Thoughts?
You’ll probably get further faster with Mandarin than with Japanese. The grammar is very similar to English, so you can easily formulate sentences with confidence that you are saying what you want to say. With Japanese, it can become difficult and complicated, because the grammatical structure is completely different.
It’s much easier to incorporate new words and phrases into your Chinese conversation, and although the other poster is correct about regional differences, it is still generally not difficult to get around (unless you are going to more remote and diverse regions).
I would suggest learning Chinese out of those two options if you want to maximize your conversation ability in a short period of time.
